7 Smart Home Security Mistakes You Might Be Making

Smart home technology is rapidly growing in Malaysia, with more families installing connected locks, cameras, and sensors into their daily lives. While these devices are extremely convenient, they may also bring risks if not set up correctly.  That's why understanding smart home security is important.  Many people unintentionally make simple mistakes that weaken their systems.  Copper Connect, Malaysia's leading provider, is here to guide you through common pitfalls and keep your home safe.

Why does it matter?

Security mistakes may harm your home and family, in addition to causing inconvenience.  Cybercriminals could break into your devices and watch your CCTV feeds or unlock your smart door. In some cases, intruders disable alarm systems by exploiting unsecured settings. One small gap can result in stolen data, damaged property, or worse.  Protecting your system helps ensure your privacy.

1. Using default password & weak credentials

Many people leave their smart devices' default passwords or use simple, easy-to-guess passwords for example like 123456 or password, which makes them easy targets for hacking. Always create strong, unique passwords for each device. If possible, enable two-factor authentication to add another layer of protection.

2. Skipping software updates

Manufacturers issue updates to address security flaws, but many users delay or ignore them.  Turning on automatic updates can help prevent this. If your device requires manual updates, schedule monthly reminders to check for new versions. Keeping up to date prevents known threats from entering the system.

3. Poor network connection & unsecure Wi-Fi

Your Wi-Fi is the backbone of your smart home, and if it fails, everything connected to it is at risk.  Some users continue to use outdated encryption and simple passwords. For example if the family had all of their smart devices connected to the same unsecured network, so when the TV was hacked, the rest became targets as well. Always use strong encryption and create a complex Wi-Fi password.

4.Relying Too Much on Cloud Services

Cloud storage allows for remote control, but it can also expose your private data if not handled properly. A user may have lost control of their video clips after their cloud provider was hacked. This demonstrates why smart home security is more than just devices, but also about where your data is stored. Before using cloud services, make sure the encryption is strong, review the privacy policies, and consider local storage options whenever possible.

5. Not Securing Your Devices Properly

Security is more than just digital. Physical access to devices can allow attackers to bypass security. For example, a burglar may cut power lines, remove or tamper with external sensors or cameras, or gain access to hardware. Furthermore, placing cameras in bad locations like too exposed or too easy to reach can facilitate physical sabotage. To prevent this, position devices out of easy reach, protect them with weatherproof and tamper-proof casings.

6. Skipping security checks

Many people install devices and then forget about them, assuming they'll be secure forever. Over time, outdated firmware, added gadgets, and forgotten settings increase the risk. Schedule regular audits to review all devices, remove those you don't use, and ensure logs and alerts are in working order. Ignoring security checks on a smart home security system is extremely risky and can result in a wide range of cyberattacks and privacy breaches.

7. Underestimating Privacy & Data Exposure

Smart devices collect a lot of data, including video, sound, movement, and possibly even voice.  Many users underestimate who has access to this data (manufacturers, third-party apps, cloud providers), how long it is stored, and whether it is encrypted. What you can do is read and adjust privacy settings, disable unnecessary features, delete old recordings, and ensure data is stored locally.

Smart devices make life easier, but smart home security should always come first.  Common mistakes include weak passwords, skipped updates, bad networks, risky cloud use, poor placement, no audits, and ignoring for privacy.  The good news is that these issues are simple to resolve with the right guidance.  A little effort now can prevent major issues later.
